Kalimpong is calmer and less crowded than Darjeeling. It's a small market town known for flower nurseries, monasteries and colonial-era schools, and it's the gateway to village homestays at Lava, Lolegaon, Rishop, Pedong and Sillery Gaon.

When to go & getting there

Best time

October to May is the best time. Spring brings orchids and flowering nurseries, and autumn has the clearest skies. From June to September the roads via the Teesta valley are often hit by landslides.

Kalimpong averages 16°C by day and 7°C at night in January; heavy rain falls from June to September. Kalimpong weather by month →

Getting there

It's about 2.5 to 3.5 hours by road from Bagdogra or NJP, up the Teesta valley. The main road is often under repair or partly closed in monsoon, so check the day before you travel.

    Village homestays nearby

Lava, Lolegaon and Rishop are forest villages with sunrise points and walking trails. Neora Valley National Park is near Lava.

  • Local food

Try Kalimpong cheese and lollipops, and thukpa in the market.

What not to do

  • Don't plan Neora Valley in monsoon

West Bengal's national parks close for the monsoon, usually from mid-June to mid-September. Check the forest department's dates before you plan.

  • Don't assume village roads are quick

Distances look short on the map, but the roads to Lava, Rishop and Sillery Gaon are narrow and slow. Allow time and travel in daylight.

  • Don't book a remote homestay without a confirmed pickup

Some villages have limited taxis. Confirm with your host how you'll get there and back.

Scams to watch for in Kalimpong

Homestays that exist only on Facebook

How it works
A village homestay page with beautiful photos asks for full advance payment to a personal UPI ID. When you arrive, the place doesn't exist or has never heard of you.
Protect yourself
Book a verified listing, check the location on a map, and never pay the full amount by UPI to a stranger.

Practical tips

  • Carry cash for village stays, because card and UPI signal can be unreliable.
  • Bring a torch. Village paths are dark after sunset.
