The Dooars are the forested foothills where the Himalaya meets the plains, between the Teesta and the Sankosh rivers. You come here for wildlife: the one-horned rhinos of Jaldapara, the elephants and gaur of Gorumara, plus rivers, tea gardens and riverside stays at places like Murti, Samsing and Jhalong.

When to go & getting there

Best time

October to mid-June is the season. West Bengal's national parks close for the monsoon, usually from mid-June to mid-September, so there are no safaris in that period. The hot months just before the monsoon are good for spotting animals near waterholes.

Jalpaiguri averages 24°C by day and 11°C at night in January; heavy rain falls from May to September. Dooars weather by month →

Getting there

Bagdogra or NJP are about 2 to 3 hours by road to Gorumara and Lataguri, and Jaldapara is further east near Madarihat. New Mal Junction, Hasimara and Alipurduar are the railway stations closer in.

Riverside at Murti, Samsing and Suntalekhola

These are quiet riverbanks and hill villages, good for a slower day between safaris.

What not to do

  • Don't book a safari from an unofficial website

Book safari and watchtower slots only through the official West Bengal forest department booking or through your stay, with a proper receipt.

  • Don't stop or get out of the car for wild elephants

Elephants cross the highway through the forest corridors, especially at dusk and at night. Don't stop, honk, use flash or take selfies near them. Keep your distance and follow your driver's lead.

  • Don't wear bright colours or make noise on safari

Wear muted clothes and stay quiet, and never feed or call out to animals.

  • Don't skip mosquito protection

The forested lowlands have mosquitoes all year, so use repellent and long sleeves, especially at dusk.

Scams to watch for in Dooars

Fake safari booking websites and "confirmed slots"

How it works
Websites or WhatsApp agents sell safari or watchtower slots that don't exist, or charge far more than the official fee.
Protect yourself
Use the official West Bengal forest department booking, or book through your stay and ask to see the forest department receipt.

"The park is closed, come to my friend's resort"

How it works
Touts tell arriving visitors that their booking is cancelled or the park is shut, then steer them to a commission-paying resort.
Protect yourself
Call your stay directly on the number from your booking confirmation before you change any plans.

Practical tips

  • Safari slots start early. Sleep near the park gate the night before.
  • Carry binoculars and a scarf or mask. Jeep tracks are dusty.
  • Leeches are common after rain, so wear full shoes and socks on forest walks.
